EL FIN DE ETA

A Documentary on the Terrorist Gang's Disarmament Negotiations

The End of ETA is a documentary that explores the tense and complex negotiations that preceded the disarmament of the terrorist organization ETA. Directed by Justin Webster, a renowned British journalist based in Barcelona, this documentary delves into the key moments in Spain's recent history as it sought to end one of the country's most feared and destructive organizations.

A Journey to the Heart of the Peace Negotiations

The documentary begins in 2000, when negotiations between Jesús María Eguiguren, president of the Socialist Party of Euskadi (PSE), and the leader of Batasuna, Arnaldo Otegi, were taking place in the Txillarre farmhouse in Elgoibar, Gipuzkoa. These talks, which lasted until 2004, were fundamental for the future of peace in Euskadi and Spain.

Throughout The End of ETA, the viewer witnesses how internal tensions within the organization, represented by figures such as Francisco Javier López Peña, “Thierry”, added complexity to the already difficult negotiations. With a radical sector of ETA ready to hinder any progress towards peace, the negotiations reached a critical point that would test the will of all involved.

A Documentary that Puts the End of an Era in Perspective

The documentary, written by journalists Luis Aizpeolea and José María Izquierdo, offers an in-depth look at the challenges of ending more than 40 years of violence. Justin Webster is known for his work on other documentaries, such as FC Barcelona Confidential José María Aznar. Una batalla inacabada y Gabo, la creación de Gabriel García Márquez, manages to convey the tension, conflict and uncertainty that marked this process.
